Calling all Commonwealth Writers!

COULD YOU WRITE SOME LYRICS FOR A COMMONWEALTH SONG?  

We would like to invite ALL WRITERS FROM AROUND THE COMMONWEALTH to submit ideas for our COMMONWEALTH SONG LYRICS. Here are some guidelines which may help.

 Love Shine a Light, a song that was performed in the 1997 Eurovision Song Contest, has very effective lyrics

CLOSING DATE FOR RECEIVING SONG LYRICS – SUNDAY JULY 18th, 2021 at 11.59 p.m.

One or more writers’ lyrics will be selected by adjudicators including The Rt Hon. Patricia Scotland QC, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth accompanied by Bruno Peek LVO OBE OPR, Pageantmaster, The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacons, Judith Weir CBE, Master of the Queen’s Music and President of the Royal Society of Musicians and Alison Cox OBE, Founder and Chair of Trustees, The Commonwealth Resounds for the composers to use as the lyrics for the song.

Shortlisted Commonwealth writers will be mentioned and celebrated on a special website which is being created for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on June 2nd, 2022.

One or more writers’ lyrics will be selected by adjudicators for composers to use as the lyrics for the song.

Adjudicators include The Rt Hon. Patricia Scotland QC, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth accompanied by Bruno Peek LVO OBE OPR, Pageantmaster, The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacons, Judith Weir CBE, Master of the Queen’s Music and Alison Cox OBE, Founder and Chair of Trustees, The Commonwealth Resounds / Head of Composition, The Purcell School for Young Musicians.

Below are some guidelines which may help.

Please read this information carefully.

Anyone may enter song lyrics for this competition of absolutely any age, whether they be professional or amateur. 

Song lyrics should be no more than three short verses in total 

The lyrics must be the original work of the applicant. Anything plagiarised or copied will be disqualified

They can include a chorus or a refrain, to be used at the end of each verse

Possible images to explore in your writing – light, love, the whole world, shining, drawing people together, harmony, peace – and of course, other images which come to mind, too. Use your imagination!

Think about including special key words and images in your song lyrics. These can help to make the song memorable.

The winning composer and writer will be expected to make the music, lyrics and copyright absolutely free until an agreed date after the event, at which time it will revert back to them permanently.
