The Commonwealth Resounds is delighted to feature a wonderful new contribution to the Commonwealth Dance Relay from Nipaeli & Rajabu, recorded at MUDA Africa, Music and Dance of Africa, a contemporary dance institute in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Their choreography, *Echoes of Ability*, is a deeply moving and joyful response to the Relay. It captures the positive power of dance: its ability to bring people together, communicate beyond words, and open up conversations about inclusion, equality and human potential.

Nipaeli & Rajabu have been dancing together for just over a year. Although their collaboration is still young, they describe it as one with a strong artistic connection, built on a shared passion for dance as a tool for expression, advocacy and social change.

They first came across the Commonwealth Dance Relay through their manager, who told them about the project and put them forward. They were immediately drawn to the Relay’s vision of bringing people together through movement, creativity and shared experiences across the Commonwealth.

For them, taking part was about far more than creating a performance. It was an opportunity to use dance and music to communicate a message that matters.

Dance as a tool for change

Nipaeli & Rajabu decided to participate because they believe strongly in the power of dance, movement and music to communicate ideas and create positive change in communities. The Commonwealth Dance Relay offered them a platform to share their experiences, show their creativity, and promote inclusion and equality, especially for people with disabilities.

Their piece, *Echoes of Ability*, is inspired by lived experience. It speaks to the challenges that many people with disabilities continue to face in society and, in particular, to the way people are often judged by appearance rather than by capability.

As a mobility disabled person, Nipaeli has seen how society can sometimes focus on what a person appears unable to do, rather than recognising their strengths, talents and contributions. There remains a common misconception that persons with disabilities cannot achieve great things, participate fully in society, or contribute to decision-making processes.

Through movement, dance and music, Nipaeli & Rajabu wanted to challenge those assumptions.

Echoes of Ability

Echoes of Ability speaks up for the abilities, talents and contributions of people with disabilities. It is a piece about visibility, dignity and participation. It asks audiences to recognise that every person, regardless of disability, gender or social status, is entitled to equal opportunities to participate, to be seen, to be heard, and to have a voice in decisions that affect their lives, families, communities and nations.

Nipaeli & Rajabu chose dance because it is accessible, welcoming and powerful. It can convey important messages in a way that is emotionally engaging and non-confrontational. It can reach people directly and creatively, opening hearts and minds through movement.

Most importantly, they wanted to show that something commonly seen as a limitation can also be an asset. In doing so, their work challenges expectations and demonstrates that people with disabilities can do so much more than society often assumes.

The video was recorded at MUDA Africa in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The setting adds another important layer to the work, rooting this contribution in a place of contemporary dance, creativity and artistic development.

A message to carry forward

Every Commonwealth Dance Relay submission brings its own story, setting and perspective. Nipaeli & Rajabu’s contribution is a powerful reminder that the Relay is not only about movement travelling across the Commonwealth. It is also about ideas travelling too: ideas of inclusion, equality, creativity and shared purpose.

Nipaeli & Rajabu have not yet passed their dance on to another person or group, but they hope their work will continue to inspire others and spark conversations about inclusion and equal participation.

Their video is a beautiful example of what the Commonwealth Dance Relay can be. It is creative, thoughtful and full of purpose. It reminds us that dance can be joyful and serious, personal and universal, expressive and transformative.

We are extremely grateful to Nipaeli & Rajabu for sharing such a meaningful contribution with the Relay. *Echoes of Ability* shows how movement can challenge assumptions, celebrate difference, and help every person to be seen, heard and valued.
